Oh Yes, God Is Real

Around midnight as the ticket counters for our airline began to open, I started to pray: “Lord, give us favor!” We were carrying not only an extra bag, but an extra MONSTER bag – a full 80 lbs when the airline’s maximum was 50 lbs. A good friend had encouraged us earlier in the day that God could make that bag as light as He wanted when it was placed on the scale! But we didn’t know what to expect. If push came to shove we were willing to pay the fees, but we were looking at close to $200 if not more.

We were called up to the counter and immediately the confusion began. While not speaking directly to us except to ask for our patience, the agent began whispering to his companion and then to the other agents across the way. He even called the office and spoke over his walkie-talkie to someone. We gathered that the problem had to do with our tickets being changed and there was some murmuring about whether we needed to pay a fee (which I knew we didn’t, having purchased flexible tickets for just that reason.)

I began to wonder if this was the situation God would use to cause the agent to look on us with favor, as long as we were gracious and patient in the meantime. And sure enough, He did! When the time came to weigh our bags, I told the agent that we were heading to Haiti for the purpose of adoption and that we extra baggage with humanitarian donations. He asked how many extra; we said one; he told us to take one of our small 20-lb bags as a carry-on instead.

The problem still remained with the monster weight of the extra bag. God definitely has a sense of humor! Even as Pedro muscled the bag onto the scale, the agent next to ours was preparing to charge his customer $50 for a couple extra kilos. I tried not to make eye contact with him in case he was checking our bag’s weight, too! But our agent said nothing except to hand us our tickets, thank us for our patience, and wish us a good trip.

Isn’t God so good?? I admit that I believed He could do this, but I didn’t completely have faith that He would. The first thing I said to Pedro afterwards was, “I can’t wait to blog about this! God is so awesome.”

Oh yes, God is real!
