We Need Some Answers

We recently re-did our "expired" fingerprints so that our I-600A can stay current for a few more months.

Our I-600A expires in November, and we were told by one source that we could renew it.

But the fine print on the USCIS site says you can only renew if you have not already filed an I-600.

We have already filed an I-600, in person, in Haiti, in September of 2008.

Where does that leave us? What are we supposed to do? Does anyone know??

The news from Haiti is all a big mass of confusion right now. E-mails were circulating from a US adoption agency, urging support of a new Haitian adoption law. The response from those actively living and working and doing adoptions in Haiti is that the adoption law is bad news. It would mean that the respective orphanages could no longer refer children to families but that IBESR would be in charge of matching all children and all families. To think of this monumental task being added to the mix of dozens of families like ours who are already stagnating in piles of paperwork in the aforementioned office is mind-boggling and utterly disheartening.

Another blog recently stated that Haitian adoptions are taking four years from the time paperwork arrives in Haiti. Four years ... I can't accept that. I can't even think about that. Frankly, if I spend too much time thinking about any of this my tears spill over and my head hurts and I find it hard to breathe.

I am trying to trust. Really, I am. I am trying to stand in His grace. I am trying to say the words, "Lord, I trust You" because I must. Please, don't stop praying for us now ...

Hi! I've been following your blog for a while and want you to know that I feel your pain! We are in the exact same boat and it is SO hard! I just wanted you to know that our I-600a expires in October. We asked what we should do about it and we were told that since we had already filed our I-600 in Haiti that there was no need to extend it. Once you file, you are fine. You still need to keep your fingerprints up-to-date, but no need to extend the I-600a. That is only for people that have not yet filed the I-600. Of course, I could be wrong about this, but this is the info we got from our orphanage. If you get an answer differently then what I have told you, please post it on your blog so that I can know too! We are certainly all in this together! God Bless!

I believe you do not need to renew your I600A once you have filed your I600. I believe the I600 takes the place of the I600A. However, you do need to keep your fingerprints that go with your I600A current. The actual I600A form doesn't matter.

The problem is most international adoptions are taking longer than what the people who wrote the immigration "rules" ever imagined. So when they wrote the "rules" they never envisioned that you could be waiting for a child for 2 or 3 years and thus made the extensions shorter lengths of time.
